What is RSS?
RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. It is a quick
and easy way to create and use "syndicated content", such as
news headlines and/or announcements.
Rave Victoria uses RSS to allow users to grab information
summaries on upcoming events. Other sites deliver news or
article summaries or blog updates so that users don't have to
browse to a site on a regular basis and dig up the content in
which they are interested.
What is a News Reader?
Basically, a news reader (or "aggregator") is software that
periodically reads a set of news sources (in RSS format), finds
the new bits, and displays them in on a single page. It is a
convenient way to subscribe to dozens of electronic "news feeds"
and is much easier than constantly re-visiting a page looking
for new content.
The orange XML logo indicates that a summary of content is
available in a format suitable for news aggregators like
Sharpreader,
Pluck,
Newsgator, or
BlogLines. These services
can offer an advantage over subscribing through email because
it's easier to manage subscriptions, you don't have to give your
email address out, and your day-to-day email correspondence is
not mixed up with newsletter distributions.
While not all sites use the orange logo to denote available RSS
feeds, many do. Those that don't will usually mention the words
"RSS", "feed", and/or "syndicate".
